Campus News and Hall Notes

October - December 1998

Dec. 20, 1998

Campus News:

Guess who was the keynote speaker at a rally awhile back to support the inclusion of sexual orientation in the University's non- discrimination clause? Phil Donahue. Those of you unaware....yes, Phil is a Domer.

Finals were this last week. The stress was so thick you could cut it with a dull-witted P.L.S. major.

Hall Notes:

Classic moment in Vermin history...
In honor of finals week, the 10 o'clock movie order is the following:
Monday: Dazed and Confused
Tuesday: Caddyshack
Wednesday: Fletch
Thursday: Vacation
Friday: Christmas Vacation
....just like old times.

NDSportscenter:

The volleyball team ended the season with a 3-0 loss to Stanford in the second round of the tourney.

Center Hans Rasmussen has transferred. That is at least the 5th player in the last 5 years to have left. Great job, Macleod.

#1 UConn women's b-ball spanked #6 us by 25. Never close. Treated us like a high school b-squad

Game time....Jan. 1....11:30 central time.....on NBC.

Dec. 13, 1998

Campus News:

Interesting story made the front of the Observer...an internet porn site which featured an ND logo was forced to change its format after the U issued a cease-and-desist letter. The nude photos pictured a girl named "Lucki" who claimed to be an ND Soph. in Lewis or Lyons. Bill Kirk would not comment on whether the U is seeking confirmation of the girl's status as a Domer. Kirk said,"I truly hope that this young lady is not a student at the U. I look at this as a real pastorl concern." Ease up, Billy. Nudity ain't bad. Would you tell a pre-apple Eve she had a "pastoral concern"?

Hall Notes:

Classic moment in Vermin history....
Can anyone say "naked slip-n-slide"?

NDSportscenter:

More on the article about the Big Ten. Besides the obvious cons of restricted national coverage and a restricted national schedule, the real points of emphasis I got were from the athletes. Lindsay Tread- well (volleyball), head of the Athletic Committee, gave the following reasons to stay out: just establishing ourselves in the Big East and not wanting to start over; recruiting would suffer as we would become just another conference team in the midwest with a higher price tag on partial scholarship sports, which is everything but football and basketball. Rosenthal said it would hurt the football program in the long run. Grant Irons, the football rep on the Athletic Committee, said we'd suffer in recruiting by losing our national schedule and reputation. Beauchamp, are you listening?

Campus News:

Anyone remember a building going up on the north side of Douglas by those railroad tracks? I remember wondering what it was. Well, it's the new location of Ave Marie Press. They finally have their own place instead of in that building by the Stepan courts.

Hall Notes:

Classic moment in Vermin history...
In honor of the soon-to-be-wed hooded gangster....
The most infamous joke in campus history....
What's the definition of a woman?
a) A sheep who cooks
b) The useless piece of flesh around a vagina
c) Some other joke that got some panty-waste from Morrissey in a tizzy so he had to swipe the Hall Notes from our john and run to the Observer like a little beotch.
....long live Nowak....

NDSportscenter:

Holtz is going to South Carolina. If he's there long enough maybe we can get him on the schedule. Oh, no wait...Dollar Bill Beauchamp is gonna sell us out to the Big Ten. Nevermind.

Campus News:

More construction news...The renovations don't stop with the Dome. The Hayes-Healy, Hurley, and Crowley buildings will all be attended to, as well as Washington Hall. A performing arts center is to be built at the south end of what has become known as DeBartolo Quad.

NDSportscenter:

Women's b-ball beat #23 illinois and are now 4-0. We are ranked 10th in one poll and 7th in the other.

Women's soccer lost 2-1 to Portland yesterday and failed to advance to the Final Four. Portland scored the game winner with 3 minutes to go in the game.

Bad weekend for irish sports.

Campus News:

More news on the Dome renovation....Total cost: $50 million. It was built in 1879 in three and a half months time by 300 unskilled workers. The renovation is taking 2 yrs. The architect is Ellerbe Becket out of Minneapolis. Elevators have been added. Classroom and library space will bring the building's 19th century roots back. It will continue to have large admin. units such as the Admissions Office and the Office of Financial Aid.

Hall Notes:

Those of you here for LSU...check out the cool Ridder picture I saved from the Observer after the B.C. game. Also Big Tim got major airtime and props from the announcers during last week's game. Big time keepin' it real for all his homies from The Hotel.

NDSportscenter:

The pre-season #17 irish women's hoops team crushed #6 UCLA last weekend. We are up to # 11. Niele Ivey (Straight outta Colleen's high school in St. Louie) tore it up with 25 pnts and 11 assts. We also landed our best recruiting class ever for next year. Got 3 from the top 100 (#8, #41, and #98).

Nov. 15, 1998

Campus News:

Construction is proceeding nicely on the new 18-hole William K. and Natalie O. Warren Golf Course. The project was funded by the William K. Warren ('56) Foundation of Tulsa. The course, designed by Coore & Crenshaw Inc, is scheduled to open in the spring of 1999. Construction costs were roughly $7 million.

Hall Notes:

I saw Ratliff last sunday while hanging out at Butler's. That was the longest goddamn afternoon i've had to endure in awhile. Can someone please give me a gun and one bullet?

NDSportscenter:

Hockey team tied #1 B.C. last weekend 5-5. We beat Bowling Green 6-2 on Friday and tied defending national champion Michigan 2-2 last night. We are currently ranked 6th.

Autry denson is now the all-time leading rusher in ND history.

#4 women's soccer team hosts first 3 rounds and has the possibility of meeting #1 North Carolina in the semis. Last time that happened we won the national championship.

Nov. 8, 1998

Campus News:

Well, the throwing of things in the Senior section made the front page of the Observer and the top story on WNDU. The following were thrown: marshmallows with pennies, a squid, golf tees, peanuts, a fish, a frog, and tortillas. A laceration and contusion were reported. Announcements were made prior to halftime to no avail. Ushers stepped up security at the gate and confiscated numerous bags of marshmallows. Some students were ejected for throwing things.

Hall Notes:

A note on former Vermin, Jarius Jackson...It was he, not Colletto, that called that idiotic Autry Denson halfback pass that got intercepted and almost returned for a TD. There was a miscommunica- tion and Jarius read the wrong play on the wristband. But Colletto still sucks for even having that play on the wristband in the first place.

NDSportscenter:

Men's soccer had an average year. They ended the regular season 9-5-3 and 5-4-2 in the Big East. The Irish finished 7th in the conference.

Men's b-ball landed a top 30 recruit for next year. He's a 6'5" guard out of Philly. The Irish currently have 3 good freshman that will see major minutes this year.

Nov. 1, 1998

Campus News:

As Pimpi alluded to early...a Burger King franchise is located in LaFortune, as is an Edy's Ice Cream Parlor. Dining at either place can be part of the Flex 14 meal plan. Pimpi, you graduated too early.

Hall Notes:

Chris Sanders reported Bert was back in town last weekend for the Army game during his off weekend. Bert is currently getting major minutes for the Colts at linebacker.

NDSportscenter:

The hockey team is having a banner year. Once the laughing stock of the Irish sports scene, (alongside the men's b-ball program) the team has risen to a #7 ranking after beating #9 Ohio State. They suffered their first loss against Western Michigan 2-1. The Irish are currently 6-1-0 overall and 5-1-0 in the conference. It is still the best season-opening start in the 39 yr varsity history.

Oct. 25, 1998

Campus News:

The renovation of the Dome is still ongoing. The fifth floor is the most complete with paint and wood trim. Still no carpet or antique fixtures yet. The building is less complete as you go down. Estimated date for completion is July 1, 1999.

Hall Notes:

While on campus with Beav Michigan weekend, we saw someone who made us both do a double take. I could've swore it Fannon. So i check out the directory....Fannon's older brother is a grad student. Lord help us.

NDSportscenter:

Monica Gerardo has surpassed Cindy Daws as the all time goal scorer in ND women's soccer history. Gerardo now has 64 goals after a 5 goal weekend awhile back. The previous record was 61. A few regular season games remain. Unfortunately we suffered a set back last week. We tied UConn and lost to unranked Seton Hall in overtime. They also won a game in overtime on Friday. We are struggling big time with the Big East tourney a week and a half away.

At the Army game...I can verify the throwing of fish in the student section. It was either a big mouth bass or a mackrel.

Oct. 18, 1998

Campus News:

Morrissey Hall was completely renovated over the summer. All interior walls were knocked out and new ones were built. Also new lights, plumbing, sinks, bathrooms, furniture, stairs, and carpet. The sidewalks between Lyons, Morr., and Howard were also landscaped. Meanwhile, Carroll rooms on Dome side continue to have radiators that single-handedly raise the temperature of the Earth's atmosphere to the point where the polar ice caps are severely in danger of being vaporized.

NDSportscenter:

Our volleyball team is getting roughed up. We were in the top 25 in pre-season polls. The team is now 6-8 and had its 78 match win streak against conference opponents snapped last weekend. A bright spot on the team is soph. Denise Boylan who is one of the top 10 setters in the country.

Oct. 11, 1998

Campus News:

I previously spoke of an addition to the Life Science Center just north of the stadium. The stats are...$5 million in cost; 30,000 sq.ft.; research labs and offices for faculty and grad students; aquatic labs; storage areas for aquatic organisms; a solarium; greenhouses on the roof.

Hall Notes:

The Vermin/St. Ed's football team is no more. Injuries dropped their number to 19 and they need 20 to field a team. Another sad day in Vermin history.

Oct. 4, 1998

Campus News:

Word on the old bookstore...Originally the general thought was that it would remain and be used solely for books. The official word is that it will be demolished and it its place will be a new structure that shall house Campus Ministry and tutoring and guidance of student athletes. The new building will engulf the parking lot and eliminate the basketball courts behind the bookstore. Can it still be called "Bookstore" Basketball without a single game being played there?

Hall Notes:

Carroll at least has some interhall footballs news. Last year there was no team. This year the Vermin have joined with St. Ed's. They have been destroyed and shutout in the first two games.

NDSportscenter:

Junior Joanna Deeter has returned to her freshman cross country form. As a frosh she garnered All American honors and finished 3rd in the country. She struggled sophomore year trying to balance social life, academics, and athletics. She has won all her races this year and has catapulted the irish to a #11 ranking. Her goal is to lead the whole team, not just herself, to Nationals.
