Campus News:
Bill Bradley, who is teaching and lecturing for one semester, has met with some strong opposition. Bradley is very supportive of the pro-choice movement. Domer pro-lifers have been very vocal in opposition in the Observer, with rallies, and even overhead banners pulled by planes that flew over the stadium during the Michigan game.
Hall Notes:
Dan O'brien had his picture in Scholastic in an article entitled "Crowdless Pleasers" about the apathy toward campus bands. He was quoted several times. The Busack-less Florida Evans Show Band and Revue continue to rock on.

Prior to the beginning of the school year, Sean Ryker was involved in a car accident. He was at a complete stop and an ambulance plowed into him and totalled his car. He was roughed up, but nothing serious. He just had a brace here and there and was on a bunch of drugs.

Women's soccer team beat #14 Duke 3-0 last friday and lost to North Carolina 5-1. We were outshot 33-3. We scored our lone goal 55 seconds into the game. We were, however, without our best player, Anne Makinen, who was playing for her native Finland's national team trying to put them in the World Cup. We have dropped to #3.
Campus News:
New meal plan available: Flex 14. It's 14 meals per week and $200 in credit each semester at campus food outlets. It's part of the plan to make the new IDs into something which students can use to pay for dining, shopping, and even potentially laundry. The Flex 14 is the same price as the traditional 21 meal system.

It will be large enough to hold buses for the visitor center. The phy. ed. golf hole is being made into a par 3 to make up for the lost 7th hole.

The new rector is a 25 yr old layperson who graduated from here. He lived in Grace. At first glance he looked like Ron "Naughty" Fontenot. Word is he's cool....so far. Fr. Al and Thomas are still there. Fr. Mike now lives at Corby Hall and is still teaching.

This year's tri-captains: Rosenthal, Howard, and Minor. Michigan is the only team with a definite advantage in the overall series against us (10-16-1). The spread is less than a touchdown. ESPN's College Gameday will be aired live somewhere outside the stadium at 10 am. Game time is 2:30 central time. Ridder is starting at guard. Starting center is junior John Merandi (6'3", 293 lbs). Finally a center with some meat. Maybe we can run up the middle a little better. Band concert before the game will be at Bond Hall (Archy building) because the Dome steps are gone and being replaced.
Campus News:

Still working on a tailgater for Michigan. Pete Leatherman had one last year. Good setup and grub. I'll talk to Manish about it. He'll be crashing at my pad so he can show us the way. We're walking distance, about a mile, so parking shouldn't be a concern.

Regarding the issue awhile back concerning talks with the big ten.... I wrote to Father Beauchamp. I was not expecting a reply. I got one, though. It was sort of a form letter, but it was sent all the same. The real story of the talks are that back in '93 when we joined the Big East, the Big 10 felt they didn't get a chance to really present themselves. So we are hearing them out. Of course they will make a big push because they want a 12th member, 2 six team divisions, and the money from a conference championship. Beauchamp did NOT say, flat out, that we would NOT enter the Big 10. The chances, thankfully, are very slim due mainly to vocal alumni.

One other thing that came out in the Moore trial...former assistant Earle Mosley testified Holtz assaulted him. It was at halftime at B.C. in '95 when Mosley tried to go after a fan in the crowd. Holtz pulled him back and said to go in the lockerroom. Holtz is all of 100 lbs. He couldn't assault a blueberry muffin.

Final Moore vs. ND notes...Colletto took the stand but his background was never brought into it (he had a previous lawsuit that was dropped by an abused player). He was known for his abuse but denied any "physical" abuse. 4 players took the stand on Moore's behalf. 3 former ones: Kaczenski, Clevenger, and Justin Hall. One current: Rosenthal. Not sure how anti-Moore coach and pro-Moore tri-captain player will get along.
Campus News:
Addition to the Freimann Life Science Center...It is the Hank Family Center for Environmental Sciences. It's got that greenhouse paneling look to it on the roof. The architecture is pretty cool as the southeast portion of the building (on Juniper by the stadium) is rounded and not cornered with 90 degree angles.

This came from Farrell. George "neckbrace" Keegan was married in Florida over the summer.

Excerpts from Moore's testimony...The cheerleader incident: Moore had players doing calisthetics in a gravel parking lot at 1 am for disciplinary reasons for their loud, obnoxious behavior while watching some cheerleader oral sex on the other side of a u-shaped hotel while in Ireland (cheerleaders...Rich Kizer and Becca Daulton). Funny thing is this was used to show his abuse to players, which means the U would have brought out this testimony....Moore admitted to striking players...Never a "punch" but with an "open-handed slap"...Apparently one player was even bloodied in a '95 spring practice...Wrap up next week.

Joe Moore vs. ND in a $1 million age discrimination lawsuit. Quick and dirty: Moore won $86,000 and court cost/ lawyer fees which my sources report at about $200,000. The jury deliberated only 4 hrs. Moore wanted $1.3 million to settle out of court. I'll recap the testimony over the next few weeks. I'll cover Davie's testimony this week....Davie testified that he questioned Holtz stability in '96. He confided in another assistant coach that he thought Holtz was having mental problems. He also said he hated and despised some things Holtz did. These items were brought out to show if this meant Davie was being disrespectful to Holtz. The point being, Davie supposedly fired Moore because of his disrespectfulness to Holtz. He was also fired because of player abuse and not being a good role model and a positive image for the U. Also Davie wanted continuity and Moore apparently had other commitments that could have interfered. Next week, Moore's testimony.
Campus News:
SDH progress...Exterior almost finished. Looks like the new end will have some sort of circular courtyard. Changes to the front. The steps, originally just a few feet in front of the doors, have been moved out about 15 ft to make room for handicap ramps on both the left and right. The ramps are "L" shaped and between the "L"s and the center steps it looks like there will be flower planters. The original front looks brand new. cleaned bricks. Ivy cleared away. The new end is built in the same style with similar brick and stained-glass arched windows. It's got one of those new-fangled goofy split peaks on top like DeBartolo.
Hall Notes:
Tim Ridder failed to be the first ND football player (to my knowledge) to live in Carroll for the full 4 yrs. (Bert Berry holds the record at 3.5). he moved off campus and is living with Rosenthal at Turtle Creek.

The Alumni benefits are starting to come my way, baby. I needed to get a copy of my transcripts for the bank for my condo loan. So i go to Grace to fill out the sheets. Directly ahead of me a present student is doing the same. He had to pay $2. I had my wallet out. The lady saw that I was a graduate and waved the fee. That's right, baby. The U saved me 2 whole dollars. I love being treated like a king.

So i'm at Rolfs RecSports center. Who do I see in a sports jacket checking out the place with his parents? None other than John Farrell. Seems he was attending the monogram club dinner. I asked him what he was doing. He said that he was working for Pepperidge Farms.

About MacLeod's future with ND...
My sources report the following....He has recently contacted a local
contractor about building a new house....His son will only be a
junior at ND ...Lamar Justice may come back and be an assistant
under MacLeod...None of the players have said anything....BUT rumor
was he was leaving to be an NBA General Manager....Also Terry Tyler,
an assistant, left to take a head coaching job....a member of the
b-ball office was fired( not an assistant), don't know if MacLeod
is on the hot seat...That's the news, interpret as you wish, but
it sounds like he's staying.
