COUNTRY! Yes, that's right, Andres "Big Country" Arredondo '00 has weighed in. Andres got his degree in marketing and then went to work for National Steel Corporation's Headquarters in Mishawaka. In February he was transferred to Dallas. By mid-January Andres was sent to the district sales office in Houston, TX. His current title is Sales Representative and Mr. Arredondo is single-handedly reviving the dwindling steel industry. Here's some info from the man himself:
"It's basically been ALL work since graduation and my training program just ended 1 month ago......BIG responsabilities + No REAL experience = FUNTIMES AHEAD. Anyway, I was dating a Domer in Dallas and things moved a bit too fast in then end.....but at least I can say that I came close to buying a "rock"..... All these moves have brought me very close to San Antonio (hometown) which is a plus. I may run for MAYOR of San Antonio someday......"

Jim Aviles '82 majored in Philosophy while living in Carroll back in the day. Jim had this to say: "I was told Arts and Parties was the way to go....Wrong. I never wrote so much in my life - and it was either long hand or typewriter, no Microsoft Word." Grad school was summed up with..."You kidding, my fingers were crippled from all the writing." Since Jim tells it so well, I'll let him tell of his work since graduation: "Pulled a 6-month stint as a security guard then got somewhat serious and went into banking. Spent '83-'85 with Bank of America in San Francisco, moved to Chicago with CitiBank until '89 then moved back to San Francisco and Bank of America. Left Bank of America in 1999 when NationsBank took over and with 4 other managers of the merchant services business formed our own company - Merchant e-Solutions. Been here ever since, and am thankful everyday I am no longer at a big bank." This June will mark 17 years of marriage for Jim. He has three kids: a sixteen-year-old future Vermin, an 11 year old girl, and an 8 year old girl.

The newest Vermin father is none other than our own Willie Bauer '98. Kendra, the mother, gave birth to Temerity Chlo-La-Ke Bauer at 7:15 pm on December 30, 1999. ("Chlo-La-Ke" means "meadowlark" in Willie's native tongue.) Willie's daughter is healthy as a (great white spirit) horse. The tale of the tape: 20 inches in length and a weight of 8 lb. 9 oz. Father, mother, and child are currently at the University of Oklahoma. Willie is in his second year in the history department studying Native American history. He will be applying to Stanford and Oklahoma for his Ph.D. which he should get in three or four years. His dissertation will be on his tribe in northern California.

So when is the last time you were published? I had a music review in my high school newspaper back in the day. It has just come to my attention that Vermin William J. Bauer Jr. '98 has written a chapter in a book that is now on sale at Amazon.com. The book is titled "Native Athletes in Sport & Society: A Reader" and each chapter focuses on different American Indian athletes. Willie has 19 pages of Chapter 5 all to himself. His segment details Tommy Yarr, an Irish Indian football player. The book was published on December 30, 2005. Congratulations to Willie on his successful publication. If you go to Amazon.com and click on "Table of Contents" you can see Mr. Bauer's name in all its glory.

Willy Bauer '98 is a father once again. Scout Wa-la-de Bauer was born on May 13, 2006 at 3:30 am. She weighed in at 7 lbs, 9 oz and was measured at 19 inches long. Scout's middle name is Concow for "Fast Runner." Wa-la-de was Willy's great grandfather's name. And the mother, Kendra, is a workout instructing queen. So "Fast Runner" is extremely appropriate. Scout's older sister, Temerity, was born in 1999 and has the middle name Chlo-La-Ke. That name is the Wailacki word for "meadowlark."

After the '84 graduation Bill moved back to Brownsburg, Indiana and joined the consulting arm of Arthur Andersen. In 1995 he became an Associate Partner in Andersen Consulting, which was part of the AA Worldwide Organization. Bill then left the AC "side of the house" in '98 and became a Partner in Arthur Andersen Business Consulting. This year he left AABC and became a Vice President at Powerway, a software company developing B2B Web-based solutions for manufacturing companies. Just this week it was announced that DaimlerChrysler (formerly just Chrysler) took an ownership stake in the company.
Bill still lives in that Indianapolis suburb and has 2 boys (or, as I like to call them..."future Vermin") with his Hometown Honey. The "future Vermin" even attend the same Catholic grade school their papa did.
16 April 2000
I'm headed to the Fuqua (Few-kwa) School of Business at Duke University to work on a Ph.D. in finance. Duke's business school is rated relatively well. The MBA program was started in 1984 and is already ranked 8th in the country by U.S. News & World Report. I plan to specialize in corporate finance. The degree should take five years to complete. Since graduating in '95 with a B.B.A. in finance, I've worked for General Electric for 3.5 years as a financial analyst and worked on a Master's Degree in Applied Mathematics at Notre Dame. I plan to continue studying at ND until graduation in late May, work for GE Investments in Stamford, CT this summer and then head to North Carolina in August.
I work in finance for GE Aircraft Engines in Cincinnati, OH and enjoy getting back to South Bend and Chicago when I can.

Word on the street is that '97 grad Bert Berry was wed last February. Bert currently plays for the Indianapolis Colts as a LB/DE. The wedding was in Texas to a woman believed to be his hometown honey.
9 January 2005
Bert Berry, defensive end of the Arizona Cardinals, had led the NFL in sacks for much of the season. He had 4 sacks against the New York Giants and is a tremendous leader in the lockerroom and on the field. ESPN even did a small piece on Bert telling of his initial fall from the league, a brief (very brief: 2 weeks) stint in the CFL, and subsequent return to the NFL. Actually Bert was drafted in '97 by the Colts in the 3rd round. He was in Indy for 3 seasons. The Rams then released him in training camp. After dropping from the CFL he was out of pro football for a year. He returned with the Denver Broncos and had a breakthrough season in 2003. In the offseason he signed a free agent deal with the Arizona Cardinals for $25 million over 5 years with a $5 million signing bonus. All praise the wealthiest Vermin! There was even tentative talk of Bert being named an All Pro. Well, he was. Bert Berry '97 is the first Vermin to make the Pro Bowl. He was 2nd in the NFL and 1st in the NFC in sacks with 14.5. Bert also forced 4 fumbles, had 39 tackles, and assisted on 10 other tackles. Certainly he is deserving of a tripto Honolulu. Vermin in Hawaii.....has a good ring to it. Well done, Bert.

Brian Buoye '98 is taking the east coast by storm. At ND he majored in Finance and History. After graduation he studied for three years to earn the Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 2002. Brian has a lengthy work history: five years at Prudential Capital Group, the private debt investing arm of Prudential Financial; one year at GE Capital; and the current gig at Jefferies Finance, a joint venture between Jefferies & Company and Mass Mutual. Did I mention his title is "Vice President"? But his best job was..."a month drunk in Europe riding a bus with Australians." Buoye lives in Jersey and commutes to his office in Manhattan. Brian also recently got engaged. Although no date has been set, the wedding will most likely be in the Fall of 2007.
5 December 2004
On Saturday, November 20, Dean "Beav" Busack '97 wed Jessica Lenore Blumling in Bellaire, Ohio. Jessica is not a Domer. She is from Dean's Ohio birthplace area. It's so close to West Virginia that the reception was actually held across the river and bridge. One wedding, two states. Jessica is not Catholic while Dean is. So the wedding was highly unique as it included both faiths. It was so original that P. Diddy is thinking of sampling it. The happy couple went to the Bahamas for the honeymoon. Upon returning they will go back to their daily lives in central Ohio where they now live and work. They have an apartment in Newark, a town to the northeast of Columbus. Jessica works for Newark High School while Dean is an admissions officer with DeVry University. They plan to buy a house in that area and continue with their current jobs.
The wedding was on the large side. There were about 300 guests. There were seven bridesmaids and seven groomsmen. Dean's two older sisters are Domers and were in the bridal party. Four fellow '97 Vermin were in attendance as guests. Tom "Tim" Mullarkey came in from Dayton. Bob Fincutter made the journey from Denver. Newly-relocated Jim "Sweet Baby" Zawada is now in Chicago. Finally, Dan "Del" Delgado drove from South Bend. And two female '97 Domers - Karen Kerney and Colleen O'Brien - rounded out the ND party.
3 June 2001
There is a birth to announce. Vermin John "Cutler" Butler '96 became a proud papa on March 29th. John Leighton Butler Jr. was born at 1:24 am. He measured 21 inches and weighed 8 lbs, 6 oz. John and his wife Tina '96 live in Niles, Michigan. They are both originally from Niles. John worked for 1st Source Bank in downtown South Bend after graduation. Then in January of this year, he and Tina became two of the three owners of Apex Technical Solutions. They started their own computer consulting firm.
15 July 2001
Ten years older, wiser and stronger and 1 million frequent flyer miles later... Matthew graduated in 1991 with a career in fresh produce distribution beckoning. He's done it all in the family business from warehouse operations to payroll to buying to sales and on into upper management. Along the way, he earned his masters degree in marketing from Butler University in Indianapolis. Matthew had open heart surgery and married Kerry in the same month in 1993. Fortunately, both "operations" netted good results, with three kids in urban utopia as a result. If you're in Indianapolis and want to talk about fresh produce, world history, or if you want to talk about hedging a market derivative against a reduction in the fed by more than 2 points, give him a call. Otherwise, there's always the Best Western.
10 March 2002
Duane "Cobain" Cobenais '97 left the Bend studied in the area of Finance. He went back to his original stomping grounds of St. Paul, Minnesota. Accenture was the first employer for three years. Then the whole "internet company" proved tempting. Interelate Inc was a paycheck provider for one year. However, economy fall down and go boom. A lay off ensued. Now he doesn't have to work. Lucky bastard. Cobain also purchased a boat and an ice shack so he had "the ability to fish year round." So he has become a fisherman. Dude has become Jesus Christ.
15 August 2004
When last we gave specific information on Duane "Cobain" Cobenais, he was unemployed. He's added to his work history since then. Digital River was first. Then it was on to Healthpartners. That wasn't all it was cracked up to be because another trip was made to unemployment. Two more companies jumped into the fray: U.S. Bank and United Health Group. (What's with all the "health"? I thought Cobain was a die-hard couch potato.) Duane is currently a consultant for Ambient Consulting. He's doing data warehousing in the IT industry.
And the family has expanded. St. Paul, Minnesota is home to Duane, fiancee Alicia, and six-month-old Elijah Thomas (born on February 27). Eli is a brute. He weighed in at 8lb 6oz and doubled that in four months. He's in the 90-95 percentile on the growth charts so a future as an ND lineman is not out of the question. Child #2 is also on the way. It is expected in March of 2005. The long awaited wedding has been pushed back to July of 2005. What a long, strange trip it's been.
10 April 2005
The Vermin Family is expanding. On March 24, Duane "Cobain" Cobenais '97 became a proud father for the second time. First-born Elijah Thomas just turned one year old in February. The newest member of the family is Samuel William. Sam is most likely a future linebacker or fullback. He weighed 9 lb. 11 oz. and measured 22 inches. Congratulations, Duane, on the expansion of your family. The good news is especially significant in light of the fact that Duane's cousin was one of the critically wounded at the well-publicized high school shooting rampage in north central Minnesota. I believe I speak for all the Vermin when I wish your cousin as healthy and quick a recovery as possible.
21 July 2002
Terry was the Vermin who passed us the history on Carroll in 1977 as the doors opened to undergrads. Terry is now a human rights and refugee attorney. He also directs a human rights program at Florida State University. Terry added: "...just goes to show that Vermin can eventually hold down socially redeeming jobs."
5 March 2000
Kevin Coskren left the shadow of the Dome with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was back briefly in the Bend in '96 when we wed Elizabeth Magness (SMC '94) at the Basilica. Then it was back to complete his MS program in Meteorology at UW-Madison. "Mutha" (a.k.a. Kevin) officially became a Television Broadcast Meteorologist (a.k.a. Rain Man) in '97. Those of you in the LaCrosse, WI area may have caught a glimpse of the weathermin on WKBT-TV8. (Oh, I didn't spell it wrong. It's "weathermin." As is "weather(ver)min.") Last year Wisconsin was abandoned for a present stint in Lincoln, Nebraska on KLKN-TV8, where every telecast is signed off with "Alibeeba, Alibaba, Alibeebalababalabo Vermin! Vermin! Rah! Rah! Rah!...... Zahm sucks."
11 July 1999
'95 grad Phil Culcasi has thankfully moved out of Lansing, MI. He and his wife, Tracy, now live in a Chicago suburb. Phil will be teaching math and chemistry in a Catholic high school. He presently is going to school to get his Masters in education.
29 May 2005
Phil is now a proud daddy of baby twin girls. His petite wife, Tracy, gave birth to two very petite girls on January 29. Abby weighed in at 3 lbs. 10 oz. and Elizabeth first tipped the scales at 3 lbs. 12 oz. And after three months they ballooned to a burly 8.5 lbs and 10 lbs, respectively. Phil teaches chemistry at Wheaton Warrenville South High School in Chi-town. Culcasi is still coaching girls basketball at the school and has been the varsity assistant for the last three years.
6 January 2002
Cris "Pimpi" Diaz '96 left with a BA in marketing and hoped to further his education at the University of Florida. He's still in the process of going after his master's degree. The official degree is Master of Arts in Exercise and Sports Sciences majoring in Sports Management. To quote Pimpi: "Kind of ironic my master's will say 'Exercise' in it." Achieving the degree, though, has taken longer than usual as Pimpi is also working full-time. He is an Assistant Manager within the athletic department. His primary responsibility is the merchandise catalog which includes production, execution, buying, processing, and customer relations. Diaz also handles event merchandising by stocking and staffing a stand at every athletic event including football games when he runs a store in the stadium. After his thesis is complete, Cris plans on continuing in the field of intercollegiate athletics and would eventually like to become an AD at some point. Pimpi's proudest moment of his professional career came this past Fall. Diaz had visited ND in September and was swept up in the patriotism of the first home game. He wished to creat a shirt to commemorate Sept. 11th for Florida. A total of 28,000 t-shirts were sold and $175,000 was donated to the Red Cross fund. Definitely something to be proud of.
6 March 2005
After living in Gainesville for 8.5 years, and having FINALLY obtained my Master's in Sport Management from the University of Florida this past August ('04), I realized that it was time to make a career move. Don't get me wrong...the University of Florida Athletic Association is a first-class program and were there more opportunity for advancement, I might've made a career out of it. But, my boss has lived in Gainesville all his life, has a wife and 3 kids and he's not going anywhere anytime soon.
So I began searching for jobs this past summer telling myself that I would not take the first thing offered. I was living comfortably in Gainesville and didn't need to leave right away. In August I interviewed and came in 2nd for the Director of Retail Operations position at the American Airlines Arena, the home of the Miami Heat and the Shaq. Then, in October I flew up to Newark NJ and interviewed with the Newark Bears, an independent minor league team that had among others, Rickey Henderson on its roster. The job was offered, however, the salary was not commensurate with the job and the New York/Newark area isn't exactly in a low cost of living area. So I passed on that as well.
Enter Nike...I got a call in early November from one of my contacts at Nike (remember, Florida is a Nike school, so I'd met some folks at headquarters in Oregon throughout my 8.5 years at UF), who happens to be a Domer (always lookin' out for each other). She told me about a position opening up in Miami at one of their NikeTown stores (only 12 nationwide). I applied for it and went through about 4-5 interviews and finally was offered the position in early December. I started at Nike on Dec 27th.
I am now the Business Manager at Niketown Miami. I am essentially responsible for the entire women's dept at Niketown Miami (the entire 2nd floor of the store!). I have 8 sales associates which are direct reports. In addition to the regular retail aspect of the job, we also are involved in various marketing events throughout the year here in the South Florida area (we are the face of Nike in this area). We're gearing up for the Ford Championships early next month (PGA event) and the Nasdaq-100 open Tennis tournament (ATP & WTA).
So, that's it. The opportunities for advancement within Nike are endless and I hope to continue up the chain.
2 April 2006
Cris "Pimpi" Diaz '96 is coming back to the Golden Dome. Sorta. Pimpi most recently was the #3 man at Niketown in Miami. Nike is about to open a Factory Store at the Michigan City outlets. Diaz will be the Assistant General Manager, #2 in charge. In early April Pimpi will be searching for a place of residence in the Bend. He will rent for a year and try the daily commute. Pimpi becomes a Hoosier the week of April 17. Then there will be three weeks of training in Aurora, Illinois. Cris will get settled in around mid-May. The store opens May 31. Who says you can't go home again?
16 September 2001
How in the hell did Admissions know to put all the smart (asses) fellas in Carroll? Vermin Neil Durso '90 graduated with a degree in Biology. Penn State was the next stop for the good old PhD in Biology. Along the way Neil wed Karlene '90 a few months after graduation. Penn State was wrapped up in 1995. One postdoc was done with USDA in Mississippi and a second postdoc took place in Frederick, Maryland with the National Cancer Institute. Neil's current occupation is an as application scientist with Cellomics, Pittsburgh's largest area biotech. In March of '98, Joseph was born. His brother Gabriel saw the light of day last December. Mr. Durso also has a Vermin alumni website. If you feel like checking it out just click on his name in the registry. Neil had this to say in closing: "PhD was the dumbest decision of my life thus far, except for hurling pizza in Lyons lobby."
30 January 2000
Here's some news of an over seas Vermin. Bill "Boo Yaa" Edwards '96 is currently in the Army and stationed in Bosnia. This is a bit better than his last deployment to Kuwait. Prior to Bosnia Boo Yaa was stationed in Savannah, Georgia for 3 years. Marriage is on the horizon in Atlanta as the Army will be kicked to the curb in May. I was able to contact Boo Yaa via the internet. Yeah, the Army + Bosnia + the internet = surprised me. Bill's making mad cash which is tax FREE. There's also extra pay and not a dime is spent. I mean, really, how many goats does a guy need?
Update on "Boo Yaa"....
21 December 2000
This is wicked late but......the marriage was called off. More bachelorhood for Boo Yaa.
9 June 2002
William Edwards is currently at the University of Georgia, working toward an MBA and trying to avoid real life for as long as possible. He's still involved with the Army Reserves, but won't be taking any overseas missions anytime soon.
28 January 2000
Dan graduated and entered the Navy. He learned to fire Tomahawk cruise missiles, including ones equipped with nuclear warheads, which led him to rethink his career path. He was honorably discharged as a conscientious objector after driving a cruiser from San Francisco to the Persian Gulf. Dan then grew his hair and lived in Berkeley, California and started to pay back the Navy for his ROTC scholarship. Dan worked as a delivery driver, a warehouse laborer, a homeless shelter monitor, a traveling poster salesman, an election observer in El Salvador, and finally a paralegal helping homeless and disabled veterans with VA claims. This path led him into the curious world of depleted uranium ammunition, which took him down dark paths into the Pentagon, and across the seas to the Hague and Geneva. Dan just returned from a depleted uranium conference in Spain, where he succeeded in pissing off some Iraqi government officials. Afterward he tested the local hard cider, which proved to be quite tasty. Dan has cut his hair and is now spending large amounts of money to procure a masters degree in law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. The future is uncertain, but don't expect Dan to be working at the Pentagon or in Baghdad. He'd be happy to talk with any Vermin interested in the Fletcher School, or the field of international relations.
2 November 2000
Tony Farina '99 is currently at Purdue working toward a Masters of Science in Civil Engineering. The focus is in the environmental area. No job is on the horizon just yet. Tony will be finishing up in December. Not much else to report but on the school itself. See, Purdue is a reknown institute for graduate work in civil engineering. Supposedly. I was curious to get the scoop. Tony provided: "I really cannot wait to get out of Purdue and Lafayette because it basically sucks here (on many levels). It has, however, been enlightening - I've realized just how much better my ND education was as compared to other schools (even in terms of my engineering education as compared to Purdue, the 'great' engineering school)."
29 October 2000
After the '93 graduation, Tim did the whole "'Hotel California' experience - checked out and never left." While the wife, Abbie, was in law school they lived in a "total dive." (zahm?) They moved to Granger (where they still live today) after a "nasty 'flood' (read - backup)." (zahm?) As far as work goes, Flap spent a year working for Congressman Tim Roemer, doing casework for military, veterans, IRS, and immigration matters. It was only for a year as Tom stated: "I then realized (note that it took me one year to recognize...) that the only person to make a reasonable living in a Congressman's office is the boss." Then it was on to Cincinnati Bell Long Distance for 9 months. "What a joy." (Note the ".") Tom followed the Minnie Pearl Hee Haw switchboard job by going to work for First Chicago NBD Corporation in Elkhart. He "made a lot of money" and "gained a lot of grey hair in the process." (Me thinks he'll be going as Matt Doherty for Halloween.) And Tom's current job is with The Chamber of Congress of St. Joseph County. He is the Director of Public Policy and manages the government affairs and other policy- related activities. Flap also lobbies. Mr. Fellrath sums it up best: "I fairly accurately refer to myself as a professional troublemaker. It's a fantastic mix of my business experience and government background. Totally scary - I'm not yet 30 and am in my dream job." (Is there a more appropriate equation than...Vermin + professional troublemaker = dream job?) Tom got hitched in the Basilica in July of '94. No offspring as of yet. He's also very active in the ND Club of St. Joseph Valley including Blue-Gold games, sports banquets, the Quarterback Club/Friday football luncheons, and being one of the few to luckily NOT get a piece of that Dunbar ass.
31 October 1999
'95 Vermin Matthew Festa became the proud papa of Natalie Claire Festa on October 20, 1999. She came complete with rounded ears, pointy nose, and whiskers. (Don't ya just love Vermin babies?!) The newborn tipped the scales at 7 lbs. 13 oz. and reached the incredible length of 20.5 inches. Apparently the little tyke was aware of Dad's tale of going without sleep for a few days in a row for the hell of it Freshman year, and decided to keep Ma and Pa Kettle up late as she was born at 4:41 AM.
5 July 1999
'95 grad Matt Festa turned down the ND law school for Vanderbilt. That location was chosen so that his wife could also pursue further education as she is going for a PhD in English. They welcome a new school in August and....a new Festa in October. Speaking of newborns...Mr. Fraire recently became the proud papa of Thomas David Fraire.
26 November 2000
Chris "C-Stone" Fillio '90 has been a vagabond since graduation. He currently works for Commerce One in Arlington, Virginia, but prior to that....well...just follow this tour de U.S.: Dale City, VA; Tampa, FL; Alexandria, VA; Cheyenne, WY; back to Dale City, VA; Washington D.C.; check this....Chevy Chase, MD (that's hype); Annapolis, MD; Bethseda, MD (2 locations); Austin, TX; O'Fallon, IL; Cedar Park, TX; Jackson, MS; Arlington, VA (2 locations); and Huntsville, AL. Dude, SETTLE DOWN! C-Stone also has his own website that you can check out by clicking on his name in the registry. The recent grand news concerns Chris' engagement. How's this for Vermin creativity.....Mr. Fillio was participating in a marathon. He ran the entire 26.2 miles with the rock in his possession. After the demanding task, popping the question must've seemed a relief. Congratulations, Chris.

The wedding of Bob Fincutter '97 and Karen "I'm Vermin too" Kerney '97 on July 8, 2000...
Well, five other lads from the Class of '97 journeyed out to Baaaaston for the Massachusetts wedding. The Best Man was Dean Busack. Two of the groomsmen were Dan Hogan and myself. The ushers were Sweet Baby Zawada and Tim Mullarkey. It was obviously a Domer wedding as the bride and groom requested that guests sing an Irish or ND tune to get the newlyweds to smooch as opposed to the clinking of glasses. Of course the bridal (and groomal?) party led the way with the fight song. In addition to that three participants in the wedding and one guest sprung a little surprise by coming front and center to perform the Alma Mater sans the band. The wedding photographer also asked that all Domers take to the floor for a group snapshot. Roughly 25 had journeyed from all across the country. Another interesting twist was that people seated at the reception were located at tables that had the themes of various campus sites. For example, the bride's parents were seated at "The Grotto" and the groom's co-workers from Deloitte & Touche were placed at "COBA." Alas the head table was not "Carroll" as there were others in the bridal party not of ND. We were "The Dome." The Vermin, however, did secure a group photo separate from the group. We hope to have it and other pictures up within a few weeks.
Bob transferred from the Deloitte & Touche office in Chicago to the one in Boston. Karen teaches biology at a local high school. They live in Reading, Massachusetts, just north of Boston.
13 February 2005
Pat graduated in 1986 with a degree in government. Then it was on to law school at the University of Iowa. Flash got that degree in 1989. Omaha was the next destination. Pat went into private practice in Nebraska and has been there ever since. Besty is Pat's wife. Three children complete their family.
29 July 2001
Michael "Steffi" Graf '94 is a gene-ius. He has received his Masters in Genetic Counseling and has been working as a genetic counselor in a diagnostic genetics laboratory at Case Western Reserve University for almost 3 years. Steffi acts as a liaison between the lab, the physicians or order testing, anad their patients who receive results. (Did I just type "liaison"? Cool. I feel so cultured.) Mr. Graf is also currently in his first year of an MBA program at CWRU. His most recent news is that on June 23rd he became engaged to Kathryn Sullivan '94. A spring 2002 wedding is planned.
11 February 2001
Gerry majored in aerospace engineering and just missed the last National Championship as he graduated in the spring of '88. It was on to D.C. for 3 years with Andersen Consulting. That was followed by a 2 year stint at the University of Chicago to receive an MBA in Marketing and Finance. Hewlett Packard came a-knockin' and beckoned Gerry for their Boise marketing department. After 7 potato-ful years in Idaho (You da ho?...I never get sick of that joke) it was back to Congress' stomping grounds. Gerry is currently the VP of Marketing of a brand spankin' new software company called Marketswitch which is located in the heart of D.C. Marketswitch is all about Marketing Optimization and other things I don't know jack about. Get this....he married a B.C. chick named Ellen. I'm certain she's been converted. Daughter Katie is 18 months and youngster #2 is making a grand entrance in May. Gerry also had a nice quote I'll pass on: "While at ND, I tried to be living proof to the truth that the engineering boys could actually do sort of well (but not great) in school and still have a good time." Sounds like my achievements. The "not great" part, anyway.
13 April 2003
Gerry got his degree in Aerospace Engineering before moving on to the University of Chicago. While in Chi-town he received his MBA in Finance and Marketing. Then it was on to Idaho for employment with Hewlett Packard. Gerry moved to Boise with his fiancee, Ellen, an '89 boston college grad. (A boston college grad??!?!?) They were out there for 7 fantastic years. Just take it from Gerry: "HP is a great place to work.. cannot say enough about the people and the company. Idaho rocks... great outdoor stuff as you would imagine, and Boise actually has a lot going on. People are very surprised when they visit." First child led to a move back east in '99 to be closer to family. There are two children now, Katie (age 4) and Keegan (age 2). Gerry was also "interested in trying the start-up thing." So now he's the V.P. of Marketing for Marketswitch in Dulles, Virginia.

Vermin Chad Green graduated '99 and went coastal as he started an MS program at Stanford in Civil Engineering. (1/2 prop for my fellow Civil and 1/2 prop for Stanford grad school for a total of 1 prop.) Mr. Green is in a program called DCI, Design/Construction Integration. "The Glove" (a.k.a. Chad) is primarily in the structural program, but DCI requires some courses in Construction Management. "Jeremy" (a.k.a. "The Glove") will finish up in only a year and receive his MS this June. Further research and a PhD have been shelved in favor of a job in structural design, construction engineering, or urban planning. (Civil engineering rules and if you're not down with that I've got two words for ya....)

Ben Herrig has recently returned from a two-year stint in Australia, and he's back in Chi working for Andersen (while they still exist, anyway). He also brought an Australian wife with him - the two were married in a civil ceremony sometime in February, and a bigger wedding is planned for the fall Down Under.

Chris Hesburgh '93
was an accounting major as an undergrad. Graduation was followed by a summer
in California before a move to Chicago to work for Schwarz Worldwide. For three
years Chris was an Account Executive on the McDonald's business. Career paths
were then altered to advertising. The next job was at Draft in Chicago on U.S.
Postal Service business. Chris then moved to DDB Needham Advertising where he
again worked on McDonald's, managing all their sports alliances. (Chris' quote:
"Those who knew me at ND would not be surprised at my affinity for McD!")
In late 1999, Chris got hitched and worked for the McDonald's racing team in
California. For two years he marketed and traveled for NASCAR, CART, and Off-Road
racing. Now married, the hectic life was wearing thin. Chris got hooked up with
the advertising firm of TracyLocke in Wilton, Connecticut. For the past four
years, Account Director Hesburgh has been working on the Pepsi Cola account.
Wife, Mary, and dog, Knute, make up Chris' immediate family.

Seumis Higgins '00 is in the city so nice they named it twice. Pretty interesting that Seumis works in New York, New York considering he's from South Carolina, as I recall. Southern comfort in the Big Apple. Here's what Mr. Higgins had to say:
"I graduated from ND with a BA in Economics in May 2000. Since then I've been working in downtown Manhattan for a small consulting firm called Jordan & Jordan that specializes in market data and securities processing. Had a plethora of jobs/duties within the firm, including a 6-month traveling/training stint across the US. No grad school yet, but would like to go back in a couple of years and work at an MBA. I'm still dating my girlfriend Marie from ND days, although she lives in Chicago, along with most of the rest of the Carroll '00 crew, so I spend a weekend or two a month flying back and forth - racking up some serious frequent flyer miles."
20 July 2003
Tom Hitselberger finished up his undergrad days in 1993. He majored in Accounting and Psychology. (I guess one could say all Tom does is brainstorm on how to make money.) Tom recently went back for his MBA. He finished a stint at the University of Maryland in '02 and had a concentration in Finance. Tom started at Arthur Andersen. Hitselberger stuck it out for four years there. A few jobs came and went. Currently Tom is the Director of Finance at Digex, a webhosting company. Tom is a reveling bachelor in Baltimore. Nuff said.

Kevin Hoffman '95 reporting for duty. A few weeks back it was mentioned that Kevin recently adopted a baby girl. Kevin and Cathy '96, his wife since 1997, adopted Kathleen Rae on December 30, 2004. She was born on December 15. Quite the Christmas for Kevin and Cathy. Hmm....Cathy and Kathleen. Potentially, Cathy and Kathy. I'm guessing they'll stick with Kathleen. The family calls Pittsburgh home. Kevin was an electrical engineer at ND and is now a senior software engineer at MAYA Design. There is a possibility of grad school in '06 to earn an MS in Industrial Engineering. Mr. Hoffman is also the president of the Notre Dame Club of Pittsburgh for 2005-06. If any Vermin are planning to hit the football opener at Pitt, check out the ND Club setup for the game. (www.ndpittclub.com)

While in Boston in early July of 2000, Dan "Hulk" Hogan '97 proposed to Sarah Metzler, a '98 graduate of Gonzaga University. She of course accepted, and they are to be wed in August of 2001 in Denver. Hogan is currently attending Colorado State University in Fort Collins and is working toward a Master's degree in English Literature. To help pay the bills, he is a full time computer programmer by Johnson Controls, Inc. The work includes web/database applications for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (http://ecos.fws.gov). The work even leads him to D.C. to meet with the Department of Interior. The computer work will continue until funds are aplenty and teaching literature a more feasible profession. Hogan has purchased a town home near Fort Collins in preparation for married life. The future missus works for the Fort Collins newspaper - the "Coloradoan" - and handles ad campaigns and event planning. One thing's for certain....... Ain't nobody in that house that's illiterate.
19 August 2001
"Funeral - No Parking." That's what the sign said that was posted in the circle drive of Christ the King Church in Denver. Is that an omen or what? On Saturday August 11, 2001, Vermin Dan Hogan '97 wed Sarah Metzler (Gonzaga '98). Two Vermin were in the ceremony. Dean Busack '97 and Bob Fincutter '97 donned tuxedos and were a pair of dapper gents. Three others from the Class of '97 were in attendance. Tom Mullarkey, Sweet Baby James Zawada, and Dan Delgado rounded out the crew. Like Big Joe Schenher '98 a few weeks before, the couple honeymooned in St. Lucia. Dan and Sarah will return to a townhome in Fort Collins, Colorado where Dan will continue to work as a computer programmer in hopes of eternally putting off finishing his graduate work in English at Colorado State.
9 February 2003
Vermin Ron Hutter '85 graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. It was then on to the University of Cincinnati where he received an MS in Aerospace Engineering in 1988. Check out this resume: worked at GE Aircraft Engines as a design engineer....on to marketing and sales for the last 12 years...currently Marketing General Manager for the Military Engines business at GE. (I guess Ron is one of the few to attend home football games and NOT curse GE-owned NBC for the excessive commercials. Money in his pocket.) Ron calls Cincinnati home but has also lived in Los Angeles and abroad in Ankara, Turkey and Frankfurt, Germany. Hutter got hitched in 1990 to Kaye and is the proud papa of Rachel, 5, and Nicole, 15 months. Kaye is actually a West Virginia grad. Ron has this to say on that: "When our relationship survived the 1989 Fiesta Bowl, where ND beat WVU for the National Championship, we knew we could survive just about anything!" Vermin Hutter also threw out this closing note:
"The guys in Carroll loved to play pranks, have fun and break the rules...dumping buckets of water from the fourth floor on guys and their dates as they walked through the side entrance, "plunging" peoples' doors at 3 AM with a toilet plunger, having keg parties behind Carroll Hall when kegs were no longer allowed on campus, having the best Happy Hour on campus on the Friday before home football games... the list is endless. It was the greatest group of guys and the best hall at ND."
Still is, Ron.

I'm currently living in Cairo, Egypt w/ the camels and Arabs, on a government fellowship through the Department of Education. I'll be in Egypt until this June (next year), and am pissed about missing football season.
After that, i'll be entering my first year of PhD program at Emory University.
4 November 2001
Chris "Wolfy" Keller '87 is - in the words of Vice President Cheney - "big time." After graduating with a degree in English, Chris went MBA. Cornell was the place and Finance was the concentration. Speaking of a Vice President, Chris is one, of Dealer Services with Goldman Sachs Mutual Funds. (Buy low, sell...if you're unpatriotic.) Mr. Keller has a Mrsl, named Julia. They spend their time doting on Sophie, a most likely precocious 19 month old. The family is squatting in Chicago's DePaul neighborhood and living quite contently.

Another Vermin is about to kick bachelorhood to the curb. In December of 1998, Todd Kuczaj '98 popped the question. Well, the time is near. On June 24, 2000, Todd will get hitched to Jessica Acklin '98 in the Basilica. Those of you who were in school the same time as Kuczaj may remember her. Todd describes her as "the blond dining hall manager with lots of blond hair and a big-ass smile." Following the wedding will be a reception in the Monogram Room in the JACC. Then it's on to the U.S. Virgin Islands for the honeymoon. The final destination is Scottsdale, Arizona, where they have resided for the last two years. The soon-to-be- Mrs. works for Arthur Andersen. Todd just received his masters degree at Arizona State. The degree was in information management and he'll start in his occupation as an e-business consultant shortly. As for additional Vermin in the wedding.....Big Joe will represent Queens while Brian Buoye's raised out in Brooklyn.
1 July 2000
Last weekend I had the privilege of attending the wedding of Vermin Todd Kuczaj '98 at the Basilica. Boy, they run a tight ship at Sacred Heart. There were no other wedding scheduled, but they still gave the wedding party the immediate boot after two hours. There was half an hour prep time, a thirty minute ceremony, and an hour for photos. The 11 am nuptials were followed by a reception in the Monogram Room at the JACC. One word....open bar. The guests traveled great distances. The groom is originally from Cincinnati, home of the Bearcat basketball team and its 0% graduation rate. The bride grew up in Omaha, and fellow little red cornshuckers were in attendance. The newlyweds having been living, and will continue to live, in Arizona. Of course the finest guests in attendance were....the Vermin. Big Joe '98 and Brian Buoye '98 were actually in the wedding. Slimmer '98 and Paul Lewis '98 joined myself as faces in the crowd. A grand time was had by all. Pictures will be made available in the near future.
18 December 2005
Todd Kuczaj '98 is now a proud papa. Samantha is closing in on 15 months. She was born on September 27, 2004. Sam was 8 lbs, 7 oz and 20.5 inches. Todd said of his daughter: "[She] started walking at about a year, and is learning new words every day. And I've taught her the touchdown signal, so she walks around the house with her hands above her head every time the Irish score." (Thanks to Charlie her arms must be very sore.) As for Mr. Kuczaj, he's a technology consultant for Accenture. Todd has been there since April 2004. Currently he's a project manager at American Express, an Accenture client. A photo of the newest Irish fan is below.
14 May 2006
James Leahy '93 is East Coast, baby. After leaving the Bend, James headed for NYC, the Big Apple, the city that never sleeps, Rudy's town, etc. Apparently his undergraduate degree in accounting was not enough. James enrolled at Columbia where he received his MBA. James and his wife, Amy, now live in Connecticut and are raising two dogs and a daughter, Kelly.
2 May 1999
Paul Lewis' wedding went off without a hitch as he got hitched. The bride, Holly Vinklarek, is soon to be a Texas A&M grad. The ceremony took place in Houston, Texas. Willie was the Best Man. Slimmer was another groomsman. The pallbearers, or ushers as some prefer, were Brin Buoye, Butler, Big Joe, Mitchell, and Karam. Other Vermin in attendance were Rangers, Ratliff, Stegmaier, and Todd Kuczaj. The honeymoon was a cruise to Mexico and Honduras. The two plan to live in Rhode Island where Paul currently works for Raytheon.
18 February 2001
Hello to all of those who walked the hallowed halls of Carroll Hall. For those of you who remember me, and to those of you who don't, my name is Jerry Maloney and I am a proud member of the class of 1997. I lived in Carroll all four years of my tenure at ND and I loved every minute of it. While on campus I majored in Pre-Professional Studies through the college of science. Since graduation I have relocated back to my home state of California and I am currently in my fourth year of medical school at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA. I plan to pursue a residency, and eventually a career in Emergency Medicine (I want to be like George Clooney). I just recently got married (August 2000) to my beautiful wife Heather who I met at my medical school. She was in the P.A. (Physician Assistant) program when we met about two years ago. She has since graduated and is working in an outpatient urgent care near our home in Irvine, CA. Needless to say I am glad that at least one of us is "bringing home the bacon". Well I think that about sums up the past few years of my life, I hope all of you are doing well in your career pursuits, keep in touch, and GO IRISH!
13 May 2001
Kevin Marietta '84 had one helluva degree title when he graduated: "Major Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in MIS." (Meanwhile, I was a minor bachelor with frozen concentrated orange juice.) Kevin went on to Bloomington, which was followed by a stint in Indy. He and his family currently live in Cincinnati. (Kevin was recently on CNN after breaking the city's curfew. He has the rubber bullet welts to prove it.) Check out this occupation...for the last 15 years Kevin has owned and operated a computer rental company with branches in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Louisville. Mr. Marietta is hitched and has four daughters. Kevin added some closing thoughts and here they are...
"It's kind of interesting that things have turned out the way they have. I was self employed at ND, and I am self employed now. Of course, my current business is totally legal (ha-ha). On a serious note, I always said I would never have any children, and I have four, (and they are all girls)! I still love to hunt, fish and play golf, although my career and family make the pursuit of these hobbies very challenging. I am even more politically conservative than I was in school, and by now I am sure that most of the liberals from ND in the early 80s have learned that conservatism is what allowed their parents to be able to afford ND in the first place, and hopefully they have matured into good "compassionate" conservatives. I still like hard rock, but now they call it "classic" rock. And since my roomates are no longer stuffing Springstein down my throat, I actually enjoy his music, too. My nick name at Carroll was "W" (or dubs), which is ironically the nick name of our current president. In summary, the more things change, the more they stay the same!
I probably couldn't have made it at ND had I been assigned to any other dorm. I am very grateful to all my friends from Carroll Hall that helped me get through life at ND, which was basically everyone in the dorm. I miss a lot of those guys and those crazy times we had back in the early 80s. I wish I would have stayed in touch with more Vermin over the years. I think the web site is great, so keep up the good work.
Lou Holtz forever, Bob Davie NEVER!!! GO IRISH!"

'95 Vermin Jake May popped the question on New Year's Eve to Maria Culcasi '97. Maria is the younger sister of die-hard Vermin Phil Culcasi '95. Jake currently works for Abbott Labs in Dallas, Texas designing medical products. Maria is enrolled in a joint MBA and Master of Fine Arts program at Southern Methodist University. The wedding is planned for the summer of 2001 with a location to be determined. Jake is also contemplating law school in the near future. No word yet on the Vermin to be in the wedding.

Cole McMahon serves as the Director of Training and Technical Assistance for the Maryland Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism. In this role, Mr. McMahon works with organizations that utilize volunteers to achieve their missions, brokering training and consultation resources as needed. Mr. McMahon most recently served as Program Director for the HomeCorps*AmeriCorps program with Action for the Homeless (now the Center for Poverty Solutions). Mr. McMahon taught English and started a service learning program as a WorldTeach volunteer in Poland, and holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He lives in Catonsville, Maryland with his wife, Amanda Sodoma McMahon.
Version 2 (courtesy of Cole himself):
Cole McMahon is a learning, growing individual who is currently serving the State of Maryland as a broker of training resources. He especially loves the opportunity to bring out the best in others as a trainer, facilitator or coach. Mr. McMahon's sleeves are permanently rolled.
Mr. McMahon draws his credibility as a continuous improvement guru from three sources: he has lived and taught in a completely different nation and culture from his own; he has studied nonprofit management and holds and MPA from the Maxwell school at Syracuse; and as a former AmeriCorps Program Director, he has seen (nearly) everything and has made (nearly) all the mistakes thereof.

Brian "Slimmer" Miller has been busy since graduation. I'll just let him tell you...
"Graduated 1998 with Phinance degree (special phunked out, phreaky course of study offered only to those with proper soul & skillz). Passed up Wall Street for the secluded hamlet of Syracuse, NY and a job in Lockheed Martin's Leadership Development Program for 11 months.
Was selected to go to Lockheed Martin's Corporate HQ in DC for a one-year rotation as part of the training program I'm on, moved in early June of 1999. Currently working in the Global Treasury Cash Management group, in charge of forecasting the cash flows and short-term debt load for the entire company. I also assist on the daily cash desk, funding all our bank accounts worldwide and moving several hundred million dollars daily.
Currently looking at job opportunities to extend my stay in DC (love it here). Will likely begin grad school unless I can put it off longer...and those who know me know that I can put just about anything off much, much longer than the average bear."
**Slimmer also served as the "worst man" in Paul Lewis' wedding, was the P.R. Director of VERMINAPALOOZA '99, and recently completed a motorcycle jump threw a flaming hoop over 87 buses to earn the title "Slimmer Knievel: The Next Generation."
26 August 2001
Engagement news on this Vermin: Brian "Slimmer" Miller '98 popped the question on the three year anniversary of the day he met his fiancie. Kim Sweeney is the lucky (or unlucky, depending on your perspective) lady. She is a '97 Virginia Tech graduate. These two crazy kids met at a Lockheed Martin event. They both work for LM, but are in quite different departments. While Slimmer grinds it out for the Corporate Financial Planning and Analysis Group, the future missus is doin' that Human Resources thang on LM's Peoplesoft database project, LMPeople. The tentative wedding season is Spring of 2002. (Note: Kim is an adamant football fan. That love fro the pigskin intruded on Slimmer's plan. Here's what Mr.. Miller had to say..."In fact, she made me delay our romantic dinner this past weekend (where I was planning to propose!) from Friday to Saturday because we got Redskins tickets and she wanted to see Vick play! Life is good.")
26 March 2000
After graduation Slim drove south to Lake Charles, Louisiana as a charter member of the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE). That was followed by a jaunt east to Atlanta where the Emory University School of Law was beckoning. After cleaning house in Georgia, Slim headed back west to his present location in Kansas City where he is an associate with Shook, Hardy, & Bacon. Business litigations defense is his primary focus. When Slim isn't suing the pants off any curvaceous young vixens, he's chillin' in a newly purchased phat crib, and waiting impatiently for Bob Davie to be fired.

Donald "Fuzzy" Modica '93 is currently in Cleveland. How did he get there? After over- achieving and graduating with two degrees - English and History (shoulda done the trifecta with "English History") - Don went on to further schooling. He attended Columbia University School of the Arts in New York and came away with an MFA in creative writing (fiction concentration) in 2001. To quote Fuzzy on his MFA... "that and $4 will get you a latte at the Caribou Coffee in Cleveland Heights." Mr. Modica is currently writing a large history book. Finally, Don sums up his recent occupational history: "Since ND I've been a reporter, a teacher, did PR in Chicago; also been a waiter and pumped gas (I was best at pumping gas). Right now I'm at the Cleveland Museum of Art (an institution, I must say, just rife with frank depictions of the human unit)."
11 June 2000
This is a classic Vermin resume. Straight from DJ himself. To dream and to achieve. The following is what heroes are made of......
I came home (Boston area) after graduation and immediately embarked on my first career of avoiding a career by moving to Cape Cod for the summer. For the next five years I kicked around from job to bad job. I worked on two political campaigns (same candidate, two different offices, two losses), I was a customer service rep for a company that sold copies to law firms called Knight Rider (enduring countless, yet deserved, David Hasselhoff and Kitt jokes), I sold office equipment, I taught snot-nosed juniors in high school how to kick ass on their SATs and, of course, the old standby of lost souls, I waited on tables.
I had avoided graduate school until then because, if my checkered academic career in South Bend was any indication, any more money spent in the pursuit of education would be like pissing into the wind. However, after hearing for years from my mother that no one was ever going to pay me to watch TV, I decided that she was wrong and, at 26 years old, was ready to enroll again in school. I went to Syracuse to study television production. If anybody thinks South Bend is cold and snowy I give them Syracuse, NY as colder and snowier. I graduated (with much less academic difficulty this time) and moved to NYC where I was editing highlights for a small cable station called NewSport. It was along the lines of ESPNEWS except viewed by about 1/1000th as many people. Perhaps not surprisingly, NewSport didn't last very long as a viable concern so I was quickly looking for a job again.
I was in kick around mode again (but kicking around in television which was better) I had freelance gigs with NBC, ABC and CBS before a Syracuse classmate called from ESPN and asked if I'd be interested in moving to Bristol. I told him he bet his sweet ass I would and I ended up in the programming department as a screener (lots of watching shows for timing, quality and content issues. In short doing the very same thing my mom told me no one would ever pay me for). I was content for about a year when I began to wonder if I was ever going to make ANY money (not much incentive for them to pay people here, there's always a few thousand kids just out of school who'll do the same job for less money). I was thinking of moving back to NY and was ready to take a job at MTV when ESPN.com came a-calling. I figured that in the long run internet was better than TV, plus they might actually let me write here. My job is mostly editing pieces about the miscellaneous sports (Outdoors, extreme, high school, etc). I write headlines, captions, synopses and such. Someday in the not too distant future I hope to be the beat editor for one of the major sports (college football would be nice but I'm not too picky there).
Other than that there isn't much news - no wife, no kids, no house, no dog. I'm not that grown up yet.

Old school Vermin Jock Mutschler is actually a Double Domer. He was in the Carroll Class of '86 and the MBA Class of '94. But check this out... He was in the Army ROTC AND a member of the men's soccer team. Jock was even the captain his senior year! Hell, make him class president for living in the farthest dorm from the field. After graduation he did his Alan Alda M*A*S*H impersonation by heading over to Korea for a one year tour of duty with a field artillery battalion. Then it was on to Anniston, Alabama as an S-1, S-4, and company executive officer for an AIT Chemical Battalion. After getting out of the Army in '92 it was back to ND for the MBA thang. One of his MBA semesters was actually in Chile. It was the first MBA class to go to that country. His job out of school (and current job) was (and is) at Breadsmith, a franchisor of bread boutiques. Breadsmith specializes in European style hard-crusted breads and has 45 stores across 14 states. Jock is the Director of Communications and handles most of the marketing. He wed in '98 and now has a baby girl. And of course he bleeds blue and gold with a golden retriever named Domer (how 'bout an irish setter?), "DOMER" is on one license plate, and "2 DOMER" on another car's plate.
29 June 2003
Vermin alum Major Steven Noll '89 has been around the world and then some. Steve majored in Aerospace Engineering as an undergrad. He was in school with an Air Force ROTC scholarship because, as Steve says, "like who can afford to go to ND on their own?" Steve is currently in the Air Force. He is also almost done with his MBA (with a concentration in military management) from Tourou University, an on-line university that allows for deployment flexibility. Steve has two daughters and one stepdaughter. The flock consists of Kayla (age 9), Nicole (age 8), and Megan (4 months). The clan has taken root in the Seattle area. They are just south of Tacoma with a view of 14,400 foot Mt. Rainier. Now for the Air Force stuff....
Steve has been in the USAF since May of '89. He has flown the T-37 (trainer), T-38 (trainer), C-141B (cargo), T-1 (Instructor Pilot), and the C-17 (cargo). He has landed on six of the seven continents and is aiming for Antarctica this winter with a 585,000-pound airplane on a frozen bay with six feet of ice. Major Noll is the Deputy Chief of Operations Group Standardization and Evaluation at McChord AFB, WA. He is the second highest qualified pilot on the base and gives flying evaluations to the pilots on base as well as standarize policy on how the C-17A Globemaster is employed. And check out this track record: Desert Storm, Somalia, and Rwanda. Then it was on to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom. Steve carried three plane loads of Al-Qaeda and Taliban "detainees." And he just returned from a tour in Iraq where he landed at Baghdad International Airport. Hats off to Major Noll for serving his country. This is one Vermin we cannot thank enough.

The hooded gangsta, Greg Nowak '95, tied the knot. Here's the recap courtesy of Michael "Q" Bergan '95...
Another member of the Vermin class of '95 fell to marriage this past weekend as Gregory E. Nowak of Wilmington, Delaware married Ms. Caroline Sweeney, also of Wilmington, Delaware and a Villanova University graduate.Caroline is a nurse in Philadelphia. Greg works as a computer programmer for Financial Software Systems.
The wedding took place in Wilmington, DE on Saturday December 11th at a 2:00 ceremony in Delaware with a reception later that night at the Wilmington Whist club. (Boy, it doesn't get much more WASPish than a whist club, does it?) Vermin in attendance included Jake May (with Maria Culcasi), Michael Bergan, Matthew Festa, Chad Harrison, Michael Angaiak, and Jeff Grabowski. Michael Bergan and Jake May were in the wedding party. Jeff Nowak, Greg's brother, served as best man while four of Greg's local friends and Caroline's brother filled out the wedding party.
Fresh tuxes for the groomsman and Greg. Can you say Ralph Lauren? Word.
Night ended with a stirring rendition of Vermin Unite.
Greg & Caroline went to St. Lucia for the honeymoon.
20 August 2000
After graduation O-Dogg lived the life of a nomad: Chicago for about a month.....Connecticut and ESPN for about six months.....a few stints back at Cape Cod (his 'hood) in between.....western Massachusetts for 2 years.....a six month tour of duty at b.c. (don't ask).....currently writing for 2 papers just outside of Baaaaston. He's a sportswriter for the Waltham News Tribune and sports editor for the Newton Tab. As for what O-Dogg's doing on the side.....well....I'll let him tell you in a third-person diatribe: "Ryan's alter ego, O-Dogg (a.k.a. Felix Barbosa) recently completed his long awaited (by some, anyway) debut LP...'Coming Out Party.' The second joint - 'Ain't Ben Ogilvie' - should be out by year's end." Feel free to email him for a copy as there aren't many left.
9 June 2002
I'm on the move again...settled in Chicago as of July 2001, working for the Sun-Times and The Times of Munster, IN. However, I'm still looking for an excuse to return east, so this might be subject to change soon. As for the recording efforts, I'm currently sitting on 7 completed tracks for a second LP, trying to track down beats for the 15 or 20 songs I have written and waiting. If I get some music, and some money to put it out...there'll be product out soon.
20 June 1999
Manish "Dogg" Patel has been accepted into the ND MBA program and will be back on campus this fall. He applied to ND, UConn, and Case Western in Cleveland. All 3 wisely accepted him. At the end of July he will leave his current job as an energy consultant. It's a 2 year program with the classes for the first being decided. Dogg will take classes the 2nd year for a general management concentration with an emphasis on finance and/or marketing. After those 2 years he will seek the job of..... digging himself out of debt.
9 June 2002
Kevin Reichart is working as an accountant for TriZeChahn here in Chicago.
15 August 1999
Word on the street is that '95 grad Jake Rhiem (a.k.a. Chowdah) was engaged last month. (But only in the sense that he got down on one knee and handed over 10 grand.) He started a philo program at the University of Texas but quit after 3 years. He is currently working as a computer programmer in the D.C. area.
10 December 2000
After Big Joe Schenher '98 got his degree in accounting he headed back home to Merrillville, Indiana. Joe currently works as a CPA in Oak Brook, Illinois for a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT). This January Mr. Schenher will embark upon a mission to DePaul for the next two years in order to receive his MBA. After those 730 or so days he'll continue in the world of high finance. Here's some grand news: Joseph is getting married in June of 2001 to the lovely Janelle (SMC '00).
22 July 2001
Can you still hear them? Off in the distance? The faint chime of wedding bells? Yip, another Vermin got hitched. Big Joe Schenher '98 wed Janelle Dombrow SMC '00 on the last weekend in June. Brian Buoye and Brian "Slimmer" Miller were ushers. Chris Patka and Todd Kuczaj were groomsmen. Guest Morris Karam was "Best Mo." (Truly an honorable position in any wedding.) The missus does Public Relations in Chicago for a group called the Weinstein Organization. The lucky couple met while doing a play together Joe's senior year. After their honeymoon in St. Lucia, Mr. and Mrs. Schenher returned to their condo in Chicago to begin married life.
8 April 2001
Mike "Lipper" Schunk '85 left school with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. For the next 5 years Mike worked in the Officer Programs for Naval Nuclear Power and actually studied nuclear power as a graduate student for 1 year. That was followed by 10 years in Manufacturing. Currently this Vermin is in sales for a marketing company as an account executive. Mike went after an MBA but decided half way through that he'd had enough school. While an undergrad, Marc studied mechanical engineering. After graduation it was on to Chrysler. Into the lions' den he then went to receive an MBA from Michigan. Then it was back to DaimerChrylser in the Dodge Marketing Division. Marc is an Advertising Manager in that Division. "Seegs" is also the proud papa of 4-year-old Gabrielle. Marc "Seegs" Seguin '85 was the author of a previous Classic Moment in Vermin History. The story of his that was contributed to VerminNet was "Zeto & Hall Storage."

Kevin "Wolf" Steele '90 went right into law school after his undergrad days. Three years were spent at Indiana University-Bloomington studying issues like why it's illegal to take the tags off the mattress. While on Bobby Knight's stomping (read: "choking") grounds he was fortunate enough to room with fellow '90 Vermin Knight Anderson. (I pity the fool who labeled Wolf a "Knight Rider." Vermin can clean house better than Phyliis and Luanne.) After law school was completed in '93, Kevin continued the tour of Indiana as he went to Merrillville to work with the firm of Burke Costanza & Cuppy LLP. (Insert George Costanza joke here.) He's now a partner who spends his days in court doing civil litigation for clients. Kevin wed Laura in '95 and they live in Griffith, Indiana. And check this out...in October they are expecting...TRIPLETS! Two girls and a mini-Vermin. One of Wolf's ND highlights was during our '88 championship run. Although he was in London that fall semester, he hopped a puddle jumper and actually flew into Phoenix for the National Championship. I guess that would be a more optimistic "Tale of Two Cities." It was the best of times, it was the best of times....

Joe Steigmaier '98 went right to work for EDS at Milford, Michigan after graduation. His stint at EDS lasted five years and involved a move from Michigan to Baltimore. But now "Stegs" has joined Oracle Consulting to work as a Unix systems administator at Fort Meade, Maryland. Joe and the missus recently bought a house in Linthicum Heights, Maryland. He married Sarah Lattimore (ND January '01) at the Basilica on January 27, 2001. Vermin Jason "J-Rob" Robinson '00 (groomsman) and Mark Koss '98 (reader) were in attendance, as were Chris Heltzel '01 and Dean Busack '97.

Word is in on another Vermin alum...
Brian "Crew" Welch '97 is moving up in the world. Straight from Crew's own keyboard....
"I'm currently pursuing my Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration at Ohio University in Athens. After graduating from ND, I worked in Sports Information at Louisiana Tech University for a few years and at Syracuse University for a few more. After SU, I decided to pursue an advance degree in Higher Ed at Michigan State University. At MSU, I worked in the Student Athlete Support Services Office.
At OU, I'm the graduate associate
in the Dean of Students Office and have another year left when I graduate with
my Ph.D."

Peter Wowkowych '86 has gone Hollywood. After graduating in 1986, Peter ventured off to New York City for five years to work as an architect. Grad school came a-calling in 1991 and that led to further architecture schooling in Los Angeles. Peter graduated from the Southern California Institute of Architecture in 1997. His current day job is as an architect for Sony Pictures Entertainment. No kidding! I guess he builds all the elaborate movie sets. Not a bad gig. Peter also had this to add: "I am working with other ND/GALA members to organize the first Los Angeles/Notre Dame Gay and Lesbian get together/reunion on March 9th, 2002 at a place to be determined... So if any ND/GALA Vermin are out there let me know."

Our very own webmaster, Jim "Sweet Baby" Zawada, recently had his graduate studies proclaimed in Stanford's Winter 2000 "Stanford Graduate Fellowship News". Here's the piece...
Converging Visionaries: Profile of a fellow and his advisor
Professor Jim Swartz and graduate student Jim Zawada came to Stanford for the same reason: they wanted to work in an environment where they would have freedom to choose their research projects. By supporting the students regardless of what they decide to study, SGF encourages the convergence of people with good ideas.
Last September, Dr. Swartz came to Stanford from Genentech, Inc. He says that, unlike the corporate development environment, Stanford encourages him to be a dreamer by allowing him the freedom to pursue research at a basic level. Stanford also gives him the opportunity to work with bright students. "It is wonderful to see developing professionals accept and expand the knowledge that defines my areas of interest."
Although the job is fun, assembling a new course and learning to teach effectively is not easy, especially while simultaneously working to set up a new research lab. Typically, not having the financial resources of an established lab makes attracting and supporting graduate students next to impossible. Dr. Swartz says that the SGF program, through its support of Jim Zawada, has helped him expand his own program faster than he had thought possible.
Jim Zawada became interested in working with Dr. Swartz while Dr. Swartz was in the process of being hired. Because Jim had his own funding, he was able to start working with Dr. Swartz right away. Jim is excited about their project. He explains: "Cell-free protein synthesis systems have the potential to provide researchers with an extremely flexible and simple alternative to fermentation for protein production. The systems could be used to facilitate protein design and studies of protein structure. Potentially, this approach also offers low-cost production for pharmaceutical and industrial proteins. Our system might even help speed discoveries leading to treatments or vaccines for diseases ranging from the common cold to AIDS."
Jim's project will contribute to these goals by increasing the efficiency of the system. The present cell-free systems are less than 30 percent efficient, and energy supply is the most expensive component in the reaction. Jim is trying to identify and remove the components responsible for the inefficiency.
Dr. Swartz says of SGF, "I think it is a wonderful program that attracts and rewards excellence. It is both important and innovative. I am involved with it through no merit of my own, and so it is a wonderful privilege to be included."
